Prostate Biopsy

A prostate biopsy may be recommended to you by a urologist to examine for prostate cancer as it is the only test that gives an accurate diagnosis. Other tests may indicate prostate cancer, but only a biopsy can confirm if it is present.

The biopsy will be performed by a urologist in our surgery center and the entire procedure generally takes less than 15 minutes.  An ultrasound probe is used to help identify the prostate and administer local anesthetic for pain control. This is inserted into the rectum.  The urologist will then use a very small needle to take tissue samples of the prostate. These will then be analyzed by a pathologist to determine if there are any cancer cells.
